I learned how to hunt deer with my father at a cabin in Maine when I was fourteen years old. I didn’t have my own gun because of my age, but he let me carry his gun for most of the hunt.

We saw a couple deer, without ever getting a shot off, but I knew I was hooked on deer hunting. That was forty years ago, and I still go deer hunting with my father, and a few friends every year.

Over those years I have had some success, and have bagged a few nice deer, and others I hunt with have had their share of success also, but I always wished I could have more success on my hunts.

I recently found a book on how to hunt deer, written by a successful deer hunter, and I got a copy and checked it out. I was impressed by what I read. Being a deer hunter myself, I was able to relate to what he was teaching about increasing the success rate on whitetail deer.

I could tell within the first couple of pages that this guy had done some hunting, and really knew how to hunt deer to the fullest. The strategies and advice in his book are really an eye opener. It showed me several things I have been doing wrong, and how to easily correct them.

As an example, I have tried antler rattling many times, and never had success with it at all. I see it work on the hunting shows, but not for me. There is a section in the deer secrets book, that explains exactly how to do it, and I have been doing several things wrong all this time. I am looking forward to trying his method this season.

There is a section in the book that covers myths that have taken on a life of their own over time. Some of them were ones I believed in, but as stated most all of them are false, and it makes sense when he explains why.

There is a lot of information about a deer’s habits, where they like to bed down, and what types of food they look for. All of these can be the ticket to getting the deer you are hoping for.

I found the section about a deer’s senses, and how to avoid being noticed, or having your scent ruin your chances for a shot at that big buck very interesting. It also covers the different behaviors of does and bucks in the field, and how knowing them can give you an unfair advantage. The book is loaded with information that I never knew.

An example tip: rubber boots and gloves do not leave an odor that will deter deer like leather or naugahyde will. I never knew that.

Everything is nicely covered in this book, from planting crops to attract deer, if it’s allowed in your area, shot placement for both rifles and bow and arrow, and how to best prepare for your hunt.

There is information on everything like the rutting behavior, and how to use it to increase your chances of a successful hunt, to the best clothing to wear for comfort, plus necessary gear that ever deer hunter should have with them.

You will also find a whole section on firearms, black powder, and cartridge sizes, with statistics and suggestions on the best ones to use for the hunt you are planning.

The section on how to hunt deer from a tree stand was quite interesting, especially where to place it for the best results. I have never tried it, but have considered it, and I might just try it now.

Deer Hunting Secrets has more information than I have space to mention. It is eighty eight pages of quality information on how to hunt deer, with tips and strategies that are very interesting to me as a deer hunter, and I know will change my way of hunting deer in the future.
